Bomb disposal experts have been alerted to a situation developing off the coast of Shanklin this lunchtime (Saturday).
A small fishing boat with 2 people on board has dragged up what is thought to be a piece of war time ordnance – a bomb.
The vessel is located just off the coast of the Isle of Wight within eyesight from Shanklin Esplanade.
Other boats in the area have been alerted to the danger and are being advised to stay clear. As it stands there are no cordons at Shanklin beach.
Explosion Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts from the Royal Navy have been made aware of the find and are thought to be en-route to the site of the discovery.
If the object is deemed viable then it is highly likely that a controlled explosion will be carried out later on today.
UPDATE – The ordnance has been successfully disposed of by means of a controlled explosion.
Specialists from the Southern Diving Unit detonated the explosive shortly before sunset.

Might just be a Silver Golf….
Wat the hell are they doing going fishing. I hop they get fined. Hardly an essential trip.
Think you will find that fishing in its various guises including Boat fishing is permitted under the current regulations, so get your facts straight before spouting off…
They are flouting the rules!!!! Stay local is the instruction and dont travel out of your village or town to get your exercise….. They drive to the marina and then how local are they fishing….bloody miles away.. and now had to get the emergency services to assist… totally incompetent.
Fishing is allowed as it is classed as excercise and good for mental wellbeing so check before making a comment.
From the Angling Trust… So they are flouting the rules, read last paragraph..
Please bear in mind these key points which will be reflected in the new Angling Trust guidelines which we will publish shortly:
We are once again able to enjoy the sport we love at a time when many others cannot and we must ensure that every angler adheres to the rules.
Selfish fishermen. Since when has fishing been essential. NHS are pleading with people to stay home and now the emergency services are having to attend to this incident because of selfish fishermen
Fishing is fairly essential for those of us that eat fish.
You would probably be first to complain if there was no food in the shops, fish is a food and doesn’t swim into shops on its own. Perhaps the farmers should be stopped from producing meat and veg, are they selfish too?
Wow most days the bomb squad come over, should have booked a weekly ticket to save cash.
Should just be based here!
Probably an old piece of pipe.
Ok so it may be legally ok to go fishing but morally. When the NHS are pleading people to stay at home i think this is very selfish behaviour.
Especially now that they’ve put themselves at risk and the bomb squad at risk by getting into this situation and having to call for assistance.
I also hope the 2 are from the same household.
I would understand fishing from the shore being ok but boat fishing were you could get into difficulty and have to call for assistance putting other people a risk seems ludicrous.
Commercial fishing is allowed in all forms there are no restrictions. Leisure fishing is allowed, but the local bit is house to boat. Once on the boat you can move around you are no more of a risk in Sandown Bay than off Bembridge.
People are saying that you can’t go fishing on a boat but every one’s at home watching 22 men running around a football pitch hugging and kissing. Their not self isolating cause quite a lot of footballers have caught it and their not sticking to the travel rules either
