A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for the Isle of Wight as the first strong low-pressure system of the Autumn heads our way.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say that gusts of up to 60mph are expected along the English Channel coast and on high land on Friday into Saturday, which will be accompanied by spells of persistent and heavy rain. Elsewhere on the Island, gusts of 40-50mph can be expected.
Tree debris will affect roads and pavements, with rather difficult driving conditions to be expected around the coast due to driving rain.
Large waves of up to 12ft around windward coasts will create hazardous conditions for small watercraft and this could lead to disruption on cross-Solent services.
Wightlink is already warning that adjustments have been made to the timetable on its Fishbourne-Portsmouth car ferry for Friday night. The operator has moved some customers to alternative sailings on the route in order to prevent the weather causing any disruption.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
“The warning is based upon the Summer warning threshold (which reverts back to the winter threshold on 1st October), meaning that this warning is based on somewhat lower wind speeds than those seen during the Autumn/Winter period. However, we have taken this into consideration and only issued a warning for the most exposed parts of the island”.
The warning is in force from 15:00 on Friday (30th September) until 02:00 on Saturday.

So no different than it has been for the last 100 years or more and there were no warnings up until the last few years. These so called experts need to get a life
Us “experts” have a great life, especially when we get to help other people plan their days ahead.
If you find no benefit from weather warnings, thats great, but some people need that extra “heads up” that something unpleasant is coming their way. Fishermen (fisherwomen), dog walkers, delivery drivers etc.
Also people can plan to avoid certain events on the day in question, or move their planned event to another day. Also local businesses benefit from that extra warning, especially ones that run their business outdoors.
The list goes on and on, so whilst I respect the fact that some people have no interest in knowing about the upcoming weather, many people actually do benefit from the forecasts and warnings.

You can’t educate pork I’m afraid so I wouldn’t even try.
Why snipe at people who are trying to help?
Yes, autumn storms and high winds are not a new thing, but it’s good to be advised in advance so we can get the washing in, rather than retrieve it from Bembridge …
So the long cold, most dire Winter of discontent begins.
Months of cold, wet , dark days and now not even a brightly lit warm home to cheer us
Stikes , likely blackouts and financial worries, which as unemployment once again starts to soar come next year will add to the growing crime wave sweeping the Island.
As those used to an easy life won’t behave as people used to do and will take what they are not given.
Watch and learn
Here we go, autumn gales reinvented as “storms” for the benefit of the climate change agenda.
Not at all, in fact we usually have more storm systems by this point in the year, so this “first” one is actually quite late. Also at IW Met we support the idea that the majority of “climate change” is natural and that the climate is constantly evolving and changing. We also follow global temperatures, week by week and at this point the global temperature is a mere 0.2°C above the 1979-2000 average.
It should also be pointed out that the word storm has a lot less impact than calling it an extratropical cyclone, which is in fact what will affect us on Friday. Also the word storm is a rather generic word that covers a whole variety of weather types, from gales to lightning, hail to snow.

Thank you for that information, Im happy to be informed and its nice to be told that temperatures have not really changed in the last 40 years, maybe somebody should tell that mob at the “met office”to do some proper work instead of pushing the climate agenda?
We dont really like to get involved in the whole climate change business. We just go by the available data, though not the data supplied by the “big” companies and agencies that we see plastered all over websites and on TV, instead we receive our data from private agencies that are stationed throughout the world, including a selection of universities that also provide meterological data. By doing it this way we get a much less biased or a less skewed view of the situation.
Oh well never mind. It’ll be the first time in months that the sea is rough and therfore NO illegals crossing the channel.
Climate change this, get a life that. I’m just worried if my coats gonna keep me dry
