The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at a property fire in Shanklin this evening (Thursday) following a ‘mini explosion’.
2 appliances from Sandown and Shanklin are on scene at Wilton Park Road, where crews wearing breathing apparatus have entered a maisonette-style address.
Island Echo has been told by neighbours that a loud explosion was heard followed by the screams of the occupants of nearby properties.
A window at the side of the property has been blown out, with debris scattered all around.
Firefighters are currently investigating the cause of the incident but it is believed that some sort of canister or container was left on top of the hob, which has then been heated to the point of exploding.
2 dogs have been rescued from the property but 1 has since run off. Island Echo readers are asked to keep a sharp eye out for the animal. (The animal has now been located).
A brave neighbour entered the property in a bid to dowse the flames and rescue the animals before the situation developed further.
No one has been injured in the incident with the household out at the time of the incident. Landlords are attempting to contact the tenants.
Islanders are being reminded to double check that cookers, hobs and other appliances are turned off before leaving the property, especially as we become familiar with being indoors for most of the day.

Well done Maldwyn Morgan for putting the fire out before the fire brigade got there!!!!
It’s nice that a dog lover saved the dogs well done old chap
Don’t want to sound rude, but it’s not very clever to leave a canister on the hob AND go out!!
Let me tell you something…We were out, came back and our smoke alarm was going off… Long story short… My wife had left a book on the electric hob. One of our cats had managed to jump up onto the hob and turn it on, causing the book to turn into a charred mess. No, we didn’t leave the hob on. The book had been on there all morning. Lesson learned. Never leave anything on a hob…
Could be handy in the future, train the cat to rustle up some grub before you come home. Maybe leave the frying pan out could do some nice sausages. All’s well that ends well.
It’s a shame the moggy didn’t record the incident on it’s smartphone – Harry Hill would have paid £250 for the footage.
Sadly Cind, you may well be proven right. Let’s hope it is more locally filled.
Glad no-one was hurt, and hope they find the dog, as it must be very afraid to lose its owners and be lost in the cold and dark.
