New figures released by the IW Met Service have revealed at over 13cm of rain fell on one area of the Island during today’s rainstorms (Monday).
The Island saw major flash flooding in several locations including Brading, Nettlestone, Ryde and Ventnor with multiple key routes closed and instances of roads being ripped up by the torrent of water passing through and underneath them.
Bonchurch received the highest level of rainfall, with 134.11mm of rain being recorded, with nearby Ventnor receiving 96.81mm.
Other locations in the East Wight also recorded staggering levels, including Westridge (72.39mm), Elmfield (54.61mm), and Seaview (33.92mm).
Meanwhile, in other parts of the Island, significantly less rainfall was experienced, once again proving the Island’s microclimate reputation.
The morning commute for many in the East Wight was a wet one, with those living in central and western areas of the Island seeing little, or no rain at all.
Vehicles were seen stranded in many locations along the Island’s key routes.
VIDEO: This morning The Cascade in Ventnor (Shore Hill) was closed for some time, which has since reopened under 2-way temporary traffic lights after the road surface lifted as stormwater gushed out.
An elderly couple had to be rescued by firefighters after they drove into 4 feet (1.2m) of floodwater at Nettlestone Hill.
Island Echo is told that the casualties spent around 15 minutes trapped inside their vehicle, which at one point was floating.
VIDEO: The sea turned brown at Wheelers Bay after a landslide occurred, damaging a local fisherman’s boat, and leaving debris across the sea wall.
A flood warning was issued to residents in the St Johns and Monktonmead area of Ryde from the Environment Agency as over a month’s worth of rain had fallen this morning (Monday) alone.
Does the Pinks and the Balls care if ‘others’ are flooded when they bask in luxury on some exotic Isle in the Caribian and live in homes you could only imagine as they add to the misery of ordianary Island people?
Building ever more homes in flood risk areas is going to cause much pain, worry and expense for the rest of us all.
Well said, Bay Winner. X
Meanwhile in Cowes, nothing whatsoever…..
Ventnor Cascade always flowed quite freely until someone decided to interfere with it a few years ago, by reducing its flow.
The Cascade is fed by a natural spring which is piped under the grove car park & down through the high street. Obstructing this flow on a normal day will cause the water to back up. Add yesterday’s deluge to an already restricted channel can only lead to what we’ve witnessed.
It had been allowed to flow freely for decades & should of been left well alone!
I find it very hard to believe over 5 inches of rain fell yesterday mm maybe, but I only saw small specks of rain. I live top of Ryde, only spitted, I drove to East Cowes lunch time, only spitting and then beautiful sunshine when there. Driving home was dry all the way. Later in the day a little more light rain.
