Residents in the St Johns and Monktonmead area of Ryde have been issued with a warning from the Environment Agency as over a month’s worth of rain has fallen this morning (Monday) alone.
Earlier this morning a flood alert was issued for the St Johns area, but that has now been upgraded to a flood warning – the only one currently in force across England.
According to the EA, 32mm of rain has been recorded in just 2 hours – which is over a month’s worth of rainfall.
Residents are being warned that outbuildings, plant and vehicles near Park Road and Rink Road may flood. With the chance that heavy showers may continue, water levels may not fall until lunchtime by which time floodwater across the railway tracks and in buildings could be very deep.
Environment Agency operational staff are working in the area working to keep the river clear of blockages.
Earlier this morning firefighters had to rescue an elderly couple from their car after getting stuck in almost a metre of floodwater at Nettlestone.

I’m sure glad I’ve not parked / moored my car in in the Ryde “nearly” Simeon Rec “overflow” car park
Apparently Ryde council now want to offer Simeon Rec as the new marina.
‘Oh I have a great idea’ said the planning officers, ‘Let’s concrete over a few acres of nice absorbent farmland, build a couple of hundred houses and other buildings, join them all to the existing drainage system for Ryde, and it will solve ALL the rainwater run off and drainage issues for the whole of Ryde and will NOT cause any issues downstream.. honest!’
Least we know how to fix this problem by building more houses……. oh wait that won’t work will it
In imperial measures 33 mm is just over an inch of rain which used to sound a lot less impressive.
Having seen the flooding this morning I have to admit that it really is a lot of water!
The rainwater cascading like a river down into West acre this morning from the Marlborough Rd. I’ve not long lived in one of these homes and was not told about potential drainage issues. I’m worried for our future of our home and the future of all of these new builds.
that’s what you have a survey for and the water used to run in to the green fields and soakaway now it will flood what a shame
More bad driving (rain) on the Island
