Families and young people joined a South Wight Area Youth Partnership (SWAY) zoom session last week to cook a delicious chilli from scratch as part of the ‘Box Project’.
SWAY’s Box Project is aimed at bringing people together and overcoming isolation whilst enabling the sharing in activities, encouraging healthy and delicious foods on a budget and inspiring creativity and artistic flair.
The project is needed during periods of lockdown when groups cannot meet for their normal sessions. Many families are feeling anxious and do not get to see others living in rural areas where transport is expensive and not always available, especially in the evening.
Great chat and banter was had as 13 households joined SWAY’s youth and families team to create a healthy, tasty meat or vegetarian chilli in about an hour. The ingredients for the nutritious and economical meal were very generously supplied by the Freshwater Southern Co-op and Tesco in Ventnor.
Young people cooked with brothers, sisters or a parent and everyone taking part was able to ask advice and share how it was going for them and admire their achievement.
The atmosphere was relaxed and fun with talk about what to cook and make for the next Box Project on 26th January, as well as in February and March.
Jennie Burke, Families worker said:
“It was lovely to see everyone getting together even if it is only online. It keeps everyone in touch and lets them know we are all in this and can get through as well as having a laugh and a joke, and good food!”
