UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, paramedics and Police are responding to a serious road traffic collision on Military Road near Compton this evening (Sunday).
3 fire appliances from Newport and Freshwater, ambulances and several Police cars from across the Island are in attendance at the scene near Compton between Brook and Freshwater.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 18:00.
At least 1 female is being extricated from a vehicle following what has been described as a head-on collision.
The road has been closed by Police in both directions. Motorists are advised to divert inland via Middle Road.
UPDATE @ 18:35 – Firefighters are working to extricate 2 people trapped inside their vehicles, 1 medically and 1 physically. A total of 3 cars have been involved in the collision.
More emergency services are arriving on the scene this evening.
The road has been closed between Brook and Freshwater Bay and is likely to remain closed for several hours. Motorists should continue to divert via Middle Road.
UPDATE @ 19:30 – 1 female has so far been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital after being extricated by fire crews.
The road remains closed.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – Military Road remains closed under a hard road closure tonight, indicating the seriousness of the incident and the injuries sustained.
UPDATE MONDAY @ 07:30 – The female passengers of 2 separate cars have both been taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport with serious injuries.
A blue Peugeot 206, which was being driven away from Freshwater by a male with a female passenger, is understood to have collided head on into a black Ford C-Max at the entrance to Compton car park at just before 18:00. A third vehicle, a Seat Alhambra, was also involved.
An elderly female in the Ford C-Max, which was being driven towards Freshwater by a male, is said to have been in a ‘bad way’ at the scene.
Military Road has now reopened following a Police investigation.
The extent of the injuries sustained is currently unknown, however Coastguard Rescue 104 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent transferred a patient to Southampton General Hospital overnight – although it is unclear if this was for a patient involved in yesterday’s collision.
