UPDATED: Medina Way in Newport has been closed in the northbound direction this morning (Thursday) following a ‘serious’ road traffic collision involving a pedestrian.
The dual carriageway has been closed between Coppins Bridge and St Mary’s Roundabout after a BMW car collided with a pedestrian near to the bridge section of the northbound carriageway just before the Lidl roundabout slip road.
The pedestrian is said to have suffered life-threatening injuries and has been rushed to St Mary’s Hospital under Police escort.
UPDATE @ 12:33 – A middle aged man has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance, it has been confirmed.
UPDATE @ 13:10 – Medina Way is set to remain closed for the next 3 to 4 hours as investigators from the mainland make their way to the Island to examine the scene and piece together the events of this morning’s incident, which has left one male with potentially life-changing injuries.
One person is assisting Police with their enquiries, it has been confirmed to Island Echo.
The Collision Investigation Unit and officers from the Roads Deaths Unit are due to arrive in Newport within the next hour due to the serious nature of the injuries sustained by the currently unidentified male.
Traffic remains heavy in and around Newport this afternoon with significant delays from all directions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area, however St Mary’s Roundabout is free-flowing.
Island Roads have been notified of the long-term closure and have implemented a traffic management plan.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – Collision investigators have arrived at the incident scene and are starting their forensic investigation into the road traffic collision.
Officers from the Roads Deaths Unit have travelled from the mainland alongside the Forensic Vehicle Examination Unit and responded from the car ferry using blue lights and sirens.
UPDATE @ 14:40 – Police officers, firefighters and volunteers are handing out bottles of water to motorists as temperatures continue to peak at around 30c.
Officers have been collecting the water from local supermarket Lidl and have used Police vehicles to distribute the refreshments to multiple areas surrounding Coppins Bridge.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – Medina Way has now reopened, with one lane currently in use northbound. Traffic is free flowing around Coppins Bridge.
It is understood the victim of this morning’s collision, a 35-year-old man from Cowes, is in a serious condition in Southampton Hospital with life-changing injuries, however he is no longer deemed to be in a life-threatening condition.
