A Freshwater man that was more than twice the drink-drive limit and did not hold a full driving licence died after his reckless behaviour led to a road traffic collision on Military Road, an inquest has this week heard.
30-year-old Steven Thurman was travelling along Military Road between Chale and Brighstone at around 23:00 on 18th August last year when he lost control and rolled into a field.
After searching the local area for the vehicle, Police eventually located a Daewoo Tacuma on its roof in a field around 100m off the carriageway.
Coroner for the Isle of Wight, Caroline Sumeray, has said that Mr Thurman’s behaviour that day was ‘reckless’ and that the crash was as a result of driver error.
Thurman, of Victoria Road, Freshwater, had only purchased the Daewoo that day. He did not hold a full driving licence and had been drinking. He had also previously been smoking cannabis.
A 33-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, who were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, survived the incident with minor injuries. Sadly, Steven sustained a broken neck and died instantly.
Steven Harry Thurman’s died as a result of a alcohol and drug related traffic collision.
