Rumours that Tesco are set to take over a current Southern Co-operative store in Cowes have been denied by the company today (Monday) amid rumours of the supermarket giant taking over the Terminus Road site.
It has been revealed that The Southern Co-Operative is in discussions with another retail operator regarding the sale of its Terminus Road store in Cowes, however the company have been unable to disclose any further detail due to confidentiality agreements.
Sainsbury’s already operate a store in the town and Tesco have confirmed to Island Echo that they will not be taking over the site, leaving a question mark over the name of the future store operator.
A spokesperson for the Southern Co-Operative has said:
“We continually review our portfolio of stores to ensure we offer the very best service to our customers, closely tailored to local demand. Our retail strategy remains focused on growing our core estate of neighbourhood convenience stores alongside a select number of community stores in village and market town locations, and we opened 14 new stores across southern England in 2014.
“Continuity of employment would be assured for all colleagues working at the Terminus Road store as they all have the opportunity to transfer to a new employer under the Transfer Undertaking for the Protection of Employment Regulations (TUPE).”
The southern supermarket group have recently announced the development of their largest ever store in Freshwater.
