The Isle of Wight Council carries long-term loan debts to the equivalent of more than £1,000 per Islander, latest figures have revealed. At the end of 2023, the Isle of Wight Council owed £162.9 million in long-term loans — around £1,156 per Islander. The amount is calculated by dividing the council’s total debt by the number of people who live here (based on the Office for National Statistics’ entire Island population data). A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council said the money has been invested in ‘essential’ capital projects, acquisitions and other investments, not spent on day-to-day services. The total amount of long-term debt has fallen, over the last 6 months, because a £5million bank loan has been paid off, saving the authority about £76,000 a year. More than 30 historic long-term loans came through the Public Works Loan Board (PWLB) – an arm of the Treasury. As of March 2023, County Hall was paying off 8 loans dating to the 1990s, 17 from the 2000s and 9 taken up between 2016 and 2020, according to figures from the PWLB. Some of the loans will mature this year, while others will take a further 3 decades. The longest loan repayment will run until 2055. No new long-term PWLB loans have been taken out since March 2020 and any future borrowing would have to meet stringent rules, with costs covered by offset income or savings. A national investigation by the BBC Shared Data Unit recently revealed how much debt local councils are in — reporting a staggering UK-wide £97.6 billion as of September 2023 – averaging out at £1,455 per person.

Are we allowed a detailed list of these supposed essential capital projects. At last the s**t is going to hit the fan for this lot. Let’s see some heads roll, there will be a lot of squirming and hastily prepared statements done today to try and cover this back up.
The biggest problem with any lists, if available even under Freedom of Information act of what and where the money has been spent will more than likely be so heavily redacted that they will probably be unreadable!
Well done IWC cutting essential services whilst playing monopoly .. !! More smoke and mirrors from the incompetents ..
What with the floating disaster and the Island cycle race it’s hardly surprising yet I’m sure they will still plough money into the floating bridge and more silly events that won’t happen
Well when you think they have spent well over 7.7 million on the floating bridge and lost £350,000 on a Lycra race it’s all their own fault it’s not down to us yet we have to keep paying more and more for everything
And yet still plenty of money thrown at scroungers with rent payments, hugely discounted Council Tax bills, taxis for the broken and free bus passes for many more. No help for anyone working who will have to pay more to service this debt – unless of course you work for IWC (from home on a two day health life balance scam, and then only after sick days)
World class whining there. Amazed you have time between your three jobs, and filling out your multiple tax return forms for your private businesses, and fleet of vehicles.
Working person.
That IS where much of our money is spent, on those not using free contraception to then gain a free or heavily subsidised home, free c.tax, extra help with heating and food, free health care prescriptions and dentistry for the entire family, free school meals and uniforms, and transport to school.
Add hundreds extra for any SEN which many have now, sometimes due to drug taking whilst carrying, and now they are talking about giving such spongers free tv licences.
Only the elderly and seriously ill should get any help the young can work, but know, to do so IF you have children, will mean you loose most or all of the above so prefer to get thousands a year AND most essential costs then FREE making them better off.
Well look, they waste money no end.
Floating Bridge.
God knows how many pool cars all lined up 10 or more.
Inflated wages.
Buying in Consultants at great cost when they are already paid to make decisions on their own.
Heating on with the windows open.
Outsourcing work when they could employ their own staff.
Paying for taxies to take children to school.
To mention just a few things.
They are incompetent and need replacing or taking over and run properly.
What exactly are the acquisitions and invetments they talk about, perhaps a statement detailing those would be useful.
If they insist on trying to play at being businessmen / women then they should be treated as the same when it all goes wrong.
Sack the CEO and then sack those responsible below that level that have messed up.
The same old problem here. The council is run by everyday people with no business experience. If this was a private enterprise then everyone would have been sacked or the business would have gone into liquidation.Sack the lot of them and bring in some professional business. Related managers.ps can you please increase my benefits with the cost of living crisis it’s hard to get by on only£350 a week.
No different to the Government, a load of useless B’stards who don’t
have a clue what they are doing.
The Plandemic showed us that!
If the stupid B’stards stopped wasting OUR money
we would not be in this mess.
The Floating Bridge is one of their biggest disasters!!
also the Ryde Interchange to name another!
it is about time religious groups pay council tax it is 2024 not the dark ages
That’s not very Christian
Mmmm, so I wonder what’s happened to the 6.2 million £ given to them by the Ministry of Justice for the upkeep on the prison estates roads that haven’t been touched yet?
I wonder if they run their household budgets the same way as they run the council they should always remember Mr Macolbers advise expenditure £1&1Penny income £1 result misery
