The High Court has today (Thursday) refused permission for the Isle of Wight Council to appeal a judgement made over unauthorised school absences last month, but the Council have been given the green light to appeal to the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court.
The High Court has granted a certificate that a point of law of general public importance is involved in this decision. This is ‘entirely as predicted’ say the Isle of Wight Council, who will accordingly, as anticipated, make an application to the Supreme Court seeking leave to appeal.
It comes after schools minister Nick Gibb confirmed the Department for Education will cover the Council’s legal costs in relation to the appeal.
The Council will not be commenting further at this stage.
