A Community Speedwatch group in Newport has been re-launched by Hampshire Constabulary.
The Community Speedwatch scheme enables members of the community to become Police support volunteers and take action against speeding on the roads of concern within their area.
Volunteers use equipment that can monitor the speed of passing traffic and then record the details, later adding them to a database. Vehicle checks are then undertaken by the Police and letters are then sent to the registered keepers advising them of their speed and reminding them of why it is a community concern.
If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in your area and would like to set up a scheme, or would like to volunteer for an existing scheme, head over to https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/careers/careers/police-support-volunteers/community-speedwatch/ for more information.

Excellent. This incentive should be rolled out across the island. Too many speeders on our roads.
It says you can set up a scheme but i would think that the website has crashed due to island demand.
Lets think about this… You pay your council tax so the police carry out enforce on the roads so you do their work for them, for nothing! You stand in the road grassing on your community to the police. The police send a snotty letter to the speeders which identifies you as group. The next time you are out in your garden tending to your roses one those motorist recognises you and gives you a mouthful. You phone the police to report it and they tell you they are too busy. Genius!
Yes, we already pay for a police force !!!
There is too many ignorant selfish drivers out there.. So inpatient overtaking speeding.. This should have been dealt with loong loooong time ago.. Seems like those Who in ‘power’ Who could make difference daily between life and death.. not interested.. Yet I have to pay for greedy council tax.. I don’t try to understand society we live in anymore.. coz I just can’t….
Good idea but unfortunately any speeding driver will not be fined. All they’ll get is a strongly worded letter. Yes it can be a deterrent but most speedsters will be up to date with what can be and can’t be done by the law in circumstances like this.
It might help if their insurance company (assuming they have any) were to be informed at the same time.
Yes possibly but fact is that haven’t committed an offence if they haven’t been charged by having just a letter – no fine,no court appearance. That’s the crazy thing about it. Therefore it would be very hard for the insurance company to justify an increase. If they did then the next time the insurance is due for renewal the person could change companies with no law to inform them of any letters received in the post. Like I said crazy.
I wish the police were on Lushington hill at 6:40 am to catch the driver of the grey FW Marsh van the goes about 70 mph every morning
Someone stand at top staplers! Racetrack by time thyve come up from bottom
If the equipment monitors and records the speed, that’s evidence, never mind a letter charge them
Unfortunately I’ll think you’ll find that these so called speed guns cannot be used as evidence in court( something to do with the validity of them) Therefore the only thing the police can do is send them a letter. Inadmissible evidence I’m afraid. Bloody hate speedsters by the way.
No way will I aid and abet our rulers in their intent to dictate increasingly lower speed limits.
