Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were called to safely dispose of a flare after a member of the public handed in the potentially hazardous device to Ryde Inshore Rescue this morning (Sunday).
The device – used to attract attention when in difficulty at sea – was discovered by a local on the beach at Appley.
The member of the public took the flare to nearby Ryde Inshore Rescue, whose crew kept it safe prior to the arrival of HM Coastguard at around 10:00.
Using a specialist box, Coastguard officers packaged up the device and removed it to a place of safety ready for disposal.
Marine flares contain explosives and under no circumstances should be disposed of via household rubbish, garden waste or in public litter bins – or simply discarded.
Anyone with a flare to dispose of should contact MRCC Solent on 02392 552 100.
