Police say they have recovered what they believe to be some of the money stolen from the Co-Op in Sandown on Thursday night following the arrest of 2 men in East Cowes. As first reported by Island Echo, officers were deployed to the High Street in Sandown at just gone 22:00 following an alarm activation at the local Co-Op store. It was discovered that entry had been forced and that £5,000 cash had been stolen. Island Echo is told that the burglars, who were caught on CCTV, were in and out of the store within just a couple of minutes. The shop’s safe was not targeted, Police say, and the tills appeared to be intact, raising questions as to where the money was stored. Just an hour after the break-in, a 37-year-old man and a 33-year-old man, both from Southampton, were arrested in Castle Street in East Cowes – thought to be as they headed for the ferry back to the mainland. The duo were arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling and conspiring to commit a burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo that a quantity of cash – thought to be from the Co-Op – was seized when the men were arrested. Both men remain in Police custody at this time. Investigations are today continuing into the incident, including whether a 3rd person was involved in the burglary.

Bit suss! Inside job from friends on mainland maybe?why was 5000 left in the store for one? Then it gets taken just after they left? Then gets recovered so quick? Thats not like the police too manage that
Do you realise that you’re casting aspersions on innocent people. How do you think you would feel if people accused you of stealing from work, and then, with no proof or evidence, posted that accusation on social media?
Im allowed an opion ta.it looks suss!similar thing happened at another co op. Chill out
He’s got a point though…
Those guys are not that clever why were they thinking they could just casually get back on the ferry like you would go to premier in for the night and leave the following day.
Why was there 5 grand just left there.
Surly there insurance wont help because there must be a limit on how much they can leave in the shop?
Where was the money? Or did they have a key for the tills but on the other hand 5 grand couldn’t have been stored in just 2 tills.
If there were ANPR ( Automatic Number Plate Recognition ) cameras at all of the mainland vehicle ferry terminals this may possibly have been prevented as the vehicle may have history, warning markers and may have had no insurance.
ANPR would be a tremendous weapon in fighting and preventing crime on the Island.
Ah, but that is how they caught them but the authorities don’t advertise the fact 😉 I’m sure there are many things not broadcast on how technology is being used. Great stuff.
It does all sound a bit odd. How long after the theft were these thieves apprehended in East Cowes and if some £ missing, where did that go to so quickly? Were Police already suspicious or tracking as it seems like it was a swift arrest. Just wondering….
