The Co-Op on the High Street in Sandown has been cordoned off by Police following a serious break-in overnight. Officers are maintaining a scene guard around the entrance to the store this morning (Friday) having been initially deployed at around midnight. Island Echo understands the store’s staff had only just gone home when the break-in occurred. It’s unknown at this time what, if anything, has been stolen. It appears entry was made through the front door but there is no sign of disturbance inside.
Co-Op High Street remains closed to customers this morning but is expected to reopen later today after forensic investigators have conducted on-scene examinations and evidence collating. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement, with further information expected later this morning. UPDATE @ 15:37 – Police have confirmed that £5,000 cash was stolen from the Co-Op last night. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/2-mainlanders-arrested-as-5000-cash-stolen-from-sandown-co-op/.
