High Street shops in Sandown recently took part in a seasonal shopfront competition highlighting the arrival of Spring and a Summer full of activities in the seaside town. Sandown has recently enjoyed Bank Holiday Fireworks and an event at Los Altos, with the Sandown Sprint returning to Culver Parade this weekend and a whole host of activities planned for the coming months including the annual carnival and regatta. This year’s competition was won by volunteers at the Sandown Carnival shop, who received a trophy created by Glory Glass of Sandown. Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot has said:
“Thanks to the volunteers at the Carnival Shop, and all of the shops that have taken part, and for highlighting the range of services available in the town, for residents and visitors”.
The competition also recognises the 40th anniversary of the Town Council, with the first Mayor Heather Humby involved, along with former Mayor and heritage champion, Ian Ward. Heather Humby said:
“Sandown has seen considerable change during my service as a local councillor, and, whilst there are significant challenges, we need to celebrate local businesses for their innovative and imaginative efforts”.
Ian Ward concluded:
“Congratulations to the Carnival Shop for their success, and for all the welcoming displays, as the Heritage Champion it’s important to celebrate the continued contribution of local businesses to the Town”.

So Ian Ward says “as the Heritage Champion it’s important to celebrate the continued contribution of local businesses to the Town”.
Heritage Champion???? In Sandown???
If that’s the case maybe he should concentrate on doing something about the burnt out derelict buildings scattered along the seafront. What visitors must think I have no idea. Sandown looks like it has recently had its own little gang war, its a disgrace and an embarrassment to the entire Island.
