COVID-19 may have cancelled its 2020 event but organisers of Isle of Wight Takeover, which attracts hundreds of car enthusiasts to the Isle of Wight, are confident the event can go ahead next month.
Submitting a licensing application to the Isle of Wight Council, Isle of Wight Takeover Promotional Events are hoping to stage the show at the County Showground in Northwood on 12th/13th June with a capacity of 2,499 people applied for.
They are asking for a licence to host live music, play recorded music and provide late-night refreshment and alcohol.
Last year’s unprecedented COVID-19 restrictions forced the event to be cancelled in March and then again in September.
Going into a fifth year, event organisers said on their website they were left with 2 options: to cancel the show again with the threat of not being able to trade going forward, or move the event to a date that was safe and one where everyone could attend.
The application will be considered by the council, with public comments accepted on the proposals (21/00325/LAPNEW) until 2nd June.
The event showcases modified and enhanced cars, attracting groups and car clubs from across the UK. There will be a show area, a trade village and, as in past events, a ‘Rev Off arena’ on Sunday.
Ensuring it meets the government and industry standard for COVID-19 safety, it is taking part in the ‘We’re Good to Go’ scheme set up by the nation’s tourism bodies, and has outlined areas where face masks will have to be worn.
Hoping to come back bigger and better in 2022, organisers say this year they just need people’s support.

I’m not a car enthusiast but I think the council should let them have the license and music. They are all there anyway plus it’s not that many people and everyone has had it pretty tough the last couple of years. If they want it let them have it. We all deserve to enjoy the things we are passionate about in life especially with other like minded people and to have fun in the process. It’s no harm to others
Yes to the music and car show, but no to a rev area, how ridiculous to pollute the air for what, fun?? Come on new iow councillors stand by your green island credentials and stop polluting our children’s air.
Revving an engine consumes much less fuel than simply driving your car A to B… So your shopping trip in your Nissan Micra causes more pollution than their revving…
And as you said.. it’s “fun”. If you’re saying we can’t pollute the air for fun…. We need to cut all Xbox leads, all tvs, all phones, all holidays, all ferry’s (there goes the island economy), actually pretty much everything we do.. Not all of us can just walk up and down a beach all day and say that’s a life well spent.
If you could provide some solid facts and figures in your worriesom post, but you’ll find it’s negligible and probably never even press send.
Yes to the car meet on the site and all the organised fun but No to all the anti social behaviour from car owners off the show site. We had no idea the meet was taking place, when we were on holiday a couple of years ago and found our holiday spoiled by the very noisy cars reving and cruising in streets and car parks almost everywhere we went. Cars reving at 5am on the day of the show at the site we were staying at, cars reving in the site car park and cruising the site, round and round. Cars parking on the Ventnor cascade for photos etc etc. I’m sure you get the picture. Holiday spoiled by selfish car owners.
My summer is spoiled by regular holiday makers bumbling about in the road looking for local quaint scenes whilst, at the same time, bemoaning our backward ways for not providing them with the very basic essentials, like Pret a Mangey or Lewis’s. Girt, gangly embarrassed kids in tow (wearing sarongs, or something equally woke) and always the ubiquitous stupid fashion dog. Being carried. Let the petrol heads come! Everyone else does.
