The UK’s leading heart charity, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) wants to say thank you to all its fantastic shop volunteers, ahead of Thank You Day (4th July 2021).
The charity’s shop volunteers play a vital role in raising funds for life-saving research – without their passion and drive it wouldn’t have been able to fund scientific breakthroughs for 60 years.
The last year has been extremely difficult for the BHF, with the temporary shop closures and the charity says it has been truly humbled by the continued support of itsvolunteers. However, it has 20% less volunteering support than it did before the Covid-19 pandemic and is urging the local community to volunteer in their nearest BHF shop.
The charity has plenty of exciting volunteering roles available, which not only provide crucial support to the BHF retail operation, but it can also help boost CVs, increase wellbeing, and provide a social network within the local community.
Volunteers can get involved in a range of tasks, such as telephone and logistical administration, merchandising on the shop floor, and answering customer queries. BHF also offer online roles for those keen to hone their tech skills, by helping to research, photograph, and list items for the BHF’s online shops.
Each year, heart and circulatory diseases kill more than 1 in 4 people in the South East and currently 970,000 people in the region are living with them. In the BHF’s 60th year, the support of volunteers in our local shops is more vital than ever – whether it is just a few hours a week or more.
As the charity approaches its milestone birthday, help it fund the next 60 years of scientific breakthroughs by giving it the gift of time, to save and improve lives in the South East.

I’ll no longer shop with them or donate to them, because I don’t agree with the cruel experiments they do on Beagles. I’ve seen the pictures of these poor dogs being used in experiments for the BHF. The same with cancer research, many people who donate have pets or are animal lovers and would be horrified if they saw the experimenting carried out on helpless animals. There are charities like the Dr Hadwen Trust who do research to help humans that do not involve torturing animals to do it.
I bet you’ll never refuse hart medication if you needed.
Oh yes i would. As would my 86 yr old friend who has always had trouble with his heart being irregular but who does not trust drugs from doctors so prefers to look after himself with organic veg. Too many people eat junk and live off processed food and drink too much and maybe smoke too, then wonder why they get heart problems. My gran used to have trouble with her heart but never took anything from doctors and certainly would not want animals tortured in her name. She lived to over 90 yrs old, not bad for someone who shunned medication, whereas some who live on it die far earlier.
I think the better question is ‘when would you refuse the medication?’ When would you start to feel the end did not justify the means?
You’re exactly right. They are particularly disgraceful, even in a tough field. There is never an excuse for testing on one species (or race, as has happened in the past) to provide benefits for the more powerful group. A long and sordid history of the powerful exploiting those without a voice.
