The controlled explosion of a 1,500lb German mine off the Isle of Wight coast sent shockwaves through the East Wight this morning, causing residents to fear an earthquake was about to strike.
At around 10:55 the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team blew up a World War II mine around 1 mile off Bembridge after the bomb was found on the seabed near to Spitbank Fort during dredging works in and around Portsmouth Harbour.
Multiple reports have been received by Island Echo of houses, windows and doors shaking predominantly in the central Ryde area.
