A public consultation has been launched by the Environment Agency after an application for a permit to drill for oil was received for a location in Arreton.
UK Oil and Gas (UKOG), which has licenses to drill for oil on the Isle of Wight, has already received over 3,000 objections to the application for a well exploration site in the area.
Now, the Environment Agency has called on residents to have their say and will take into account any objections that are ‘valid’.
If the permit was granted, UKOG would be allowed to operate at the proposed site near New Barn Business Park for 3 years. As well as 2 exploratory boreholes, the works would also see the installation of heavy plant equipment alongside drilling and testing equipment.
Natural gas produced during the testing of the well would be burnt by a temporary on-site flare – the same sort of equipment that can be seen in the air at Fawley refinery.
Oil, surface water, and other products from the site would be collected and removed from the site for further use and disposal. An Environment Permit sets out stringent conditions that all oil and gas sites must adhere to.
If you’d like to have your say, you can comment here before the consultation ends on the 9th July 2021.
