Police responded in force to reports of anti social behaviour in the centre of Newport last night (Friday), which resulted in the arrest of 2 local teenagers.
A large group of youths are reported to have congregated in the area of McDonalds and Newport Bus Station shortly before 21:00.
As well as dispersing the crowds, officers arrested a 16-year-old girl from Wroxall on suspicion of assault and obstructing Police. She has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.
A 16-year-old boy from Newport was also arrested, on suspicion of attempted criminal damage, but he was subsequently de-arrested.
Local residents have spoken out about the continuing situation of crowds of youngsters gathering in areas around the town, such as the cinema, library, bus station and McDonalds, which is said to lead to fights and general anti social behaviour.
“I avoid going to McDonalds past 3pm now because there’s always rude teenagers hanging around outside, smoking and shouting. It makes me feel quite intimated whilst I have my 5 month old with me”.
Another has said:
“Their parents need to be brought in. It’s just really sad and if not stopped now it will end in tragedy”.
