Finley Phillips marked his 300th Cowes Sports appearance on Saturday (17th January) against Laverstock & Ford, reaching the milestone at just 26 years old.
The midfielder made his senior debut for Cowes Sports during the 2015/16 season against Andover Town and has since reached 300 appearances for the Yachtsmen, with his senior career spent almost entirely at the club.
Aside from a short spell with Bath City while studying at university, Cowes Sports has been Phillips’ only senior side. Over that time, he estimates he has scored around 40 goals for the club, while noting that assists are not recorded at this level.
When reflecting on his best moments in the game, Phillips points to experiences rather than individual performances. Playing in strong atmospheres and in stadium settings stands out, offering memories beyond the week-to-week rhythm of league football.
There have also been difficult moments. Phillips recalls being on the end of heavy defeats against top Wessex League sides, particularly Horndean and Portchester during their strongest periods. One result that still stands out was losing his first Isle of Wight Gold Cup final as Cowes captain, a 4–1 defeat to Newport.
Phillips’ footballing journey has briefly crossed with the professional game. He once played alongside former Glenn Murray during a Bournemouth under-21s friendly. Murray later enjoyed a long career with Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.
The toughest opponent Phillips has faced was Brett Pitman, the former Portsmouth striker who, he says, always seemed to find the net.
An Arsenal supporter, Phillips names Declan Rice as his favourite professional player and describes him as a complete all-round midfielder.
Away from football, Phillips works in content production for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Outside the game he plays a range of sports including darts, padel, and golf. His favourites away from sport include hash browns, flat whites, the film Heat, and a broad taste in music, most recently funk and soul.

Looking ahead, Phillips says he would like to win the Wessex League Cup with Cowes Sports and hopes to go to another Island Games. Beyond that, his focus is on continuing to enjoy playing football for as long as possible.
