There has been a local spike in the number of cases of COVID-19, with a further 5 instances recorded on the Isle of Wight.
Today’s news comes as the official NHS Test and Trace app has alerted people living in the PO31 (Cowes) area that the risk level is now considered ‘medium’, rising from ‘low’.
The latest official figures show that 2 new cases were listed on 17th September and another case the next day on 18th September. Just 24 hours later and another 2 cases were identified, followed by 1 more case on 21st September.
Public Health England says that since the start of the pandemic there have been 455 cases of coronavirus on the Island.
So far this month, in the month of September, 22 people have tested positive for COVID-19. That is a significant increase on the month of August when 10 cases were recorded.

If visitors are still allowed to come over we can expect more and more cases asthey can arruve and mix with residents with no isolation. Please no more visitors for several weeks
How do you expect businesses to survive?
We all have to live with this virus fact !!
Well said. People need to work pubs and restaurants need to stay open. I expect all those who say close pubs and restaurants are pensioners who don’t need to worry about making a living and keeping your business going. They can easily sit at home as much as they need knowing they will still get their pensions paid no worries! Some of us don’t get income if we don’t work or a very much reduced one and we have families to support and mortgages and bills to pay.
We need to learn to live with it rather than hide away as it’ll still be there when you come out. Follow the guidelines even if they are a bit contradictory and we can all do our bit.
Don’t get angry with pensioners, because a lot of the times it is pensioners sitting in the pubs at night. We should all be sensible, think about the people whe are not getting paid, or at risk of losing their business, bickering dosnt help.
If everybody’s sick then it wont matter about businesses anyway..
But we do not know if these people are in hospital or not. We have to learn to live with it in my opinion. Its not going away
Agree it is NOT going away. The Gov know this, and all they have done is buy ‘time’, time to equip hospitals, time to amass gels, masks, cold storage of those who don’t make it etc.
They can’t openly say, we are all likely to catch this as it causes panic, but they know the best they can do is ensure a ‘steady’ infection rate, so we don’t have to die in our homes as we would if hospitials we so full and couldn’t cope.
That would be horrible for us, and would destroy the Tory party who would never be forgiven if your loved one could not be found room in a hospital.
But they cannot say so, but it to me was obvious from early on.
Most children have caught a cold since school returned, so, with cv being far more easy to catch, then there is little chance of us all not falling victim within the next year or so.
What about islanders going to the mainland and coming back then JAN?
People have to survive somehow my friend!!
.
Grow up
The threshold for quarantining, as a result of traveling back from Covid dangerous countries abroad to the UK is set at 20 per 100,000. The mainland passed that threshold level several days ago. Given the relative low infection rates in the Island anyone returning to the Island from the mainland MUST self isolate for 2 weeks. Trouble is no one can believe the reported numbers on the Island. So much confidential evidence is being withheld that suggests that the truth is being hidden. Why exactly – peoples lives are at risk.
Interesting in that a specific Post Code has been stated, is this a first ?
It’s not just Cowes PO33 has also changed guessing it’ll be Islandwide…
The app is also alerting the PO33 area that the risk level is medium, but it says rather confusingly “Your local authority or a neighbouring local authority has higher level of infections than other parts of the country”.
Why the hell is there a delay on that hospital releasing data. Typical, close the pubs completely, stop people staying in B&B’s (Some of which were open illegally during the lockdown) and stop people staying in hotels. KEEP THE ISLAND SAFE. Come on Seely say something positive for once in your life.
PO39 has also been moved up to medium from low risk according to my app!
Jan, we need to introduce some extra genes into the islands gene pool… to much inbreeding here on the island, looking at some of the comments on this website there’s definitely a need for it.
At last, a realistic comment from someone.Thank you Truth. Totally agree.
well thats it then – panic everybody – run around in circles, the boogie man virus is coming – hide indoors.
jeez – beggars belief the scandalous scare mongering going on.
I laugh when he says to wear face covering or mask, i realise people are not required to wear for health Reasons like my self but I do, some people just choose not to wear a mask, putting them selfs at risk and others. If you don’t have to wear a mask try a visor or get someone else to shop or home delivery
Say no to masks
I’m po33 and phone app now says medium
run mate its coming for ya
Po30 has been updated too
PO37 has been upgraded too
Not unusual and not a first, my NHS app has just told me that Ryde is now at medium as well.
I wouldn’t call that a SPIKE. 10 cases in August, 22 cases in September. As would be expected 2 weeks after most visitors have left the Island(supposed 7 day incubation period)and children have gone back to school. How many ‘victims’ have we got in St Mary’s at present is more relevant.!!
People need to learn to live with the virus, it’s coming and has been since March. Cases will rise on the island without doubt. You can’t close the island off, it’s to late for that now.
It’s all about reducing the risk to yourself from now on. So wash your hands and keep your distance. Get your shopping delivered don’t go out uncesserely. Keep yourself safe it’s all you can do.
Absolutely Roger. Agree. Well said.
Do you work for Tesco by any chance? Ridiculous advice. Wake up.
It’s not advice, it’s the only option anyone has. I would have thought the “oracle” would be able to see that…
You are joking saying get your shopping delivered as like last time there will be no slots left as people will be panicking and all trying for a delivery and next week the supermarkets will be half empty of food because of it again.
There are slots available, I have my shopping delivered every week.
I don’t think people are panicking at all.
My daughter works for a superstore on the island and they are not sold out of toilet roll or pasta. I think people have realised you can get everything after last time.
Has maths changed ? I make that 6 going on what you have written islandecho…so what is it 5 or 6 ?
“The latest official figures show that 2 new cases were listed on 17th September and another case the next day on 18th September. Just 24 hours later and another 2 cases were identified, followed by 1 more case on 21st September.”
If you read the article it says that due to the rise in numbers in Cowes the whole Island status has changed.
Where’s the exponential growth? Why is the Isle of Wight in lockdown with only what 5 new cases, and who knows how many are false positives. This is crazy.
For those of you worried about the alerts arriving on your phone,a simple solution. Turn OFF the blue-tooth and GPS facility on your phone or switch off the phone, use a phone without the app.
Dear oh dear! Let’s all hide quick!!
🙂
Facts from ons official website, deaths of people since February of covid 19, with no underlining health problems, ready? 20 yrs (4). 40 yrs (39) and 60yrs (307) . Very sad for those involved, but these are the facts!
Sorry should say this is the UK, with 67 million people!
Probably should also say NO KNOWN underlying health conditions.
My Brother on the mainland had it as paramedic. He is not what id call healthy being plump and sedentary lifestyle and in mid 50s. He got over it with some antibiotic support to clear secondary chest infections Covid can cause. He is fine and has antibodies now to it. Keep safe but if we live with it we may just get over it.
Getting and recovering from Covid doesn’t make you immune from Covid.
Enough with the “breaking news”.its not.its life get on with it .! be careful or catch it then.take your chances.not big deal for most .but hey lets all suffer and not make our own decisions in life.
Stop scaremongering echo .its boring
