A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with temperatures expected to hit -4c overnight.
Rain, sleet and hill snow that falls this evening (Wednesday) will clear away after midnight allowing clear spells to develop and this will send the temperatures plummeting across the Island.
Large icy stretches on rural and untreated roads and surfaces are to be expected with a few places seeing temperatures fall as low as -4c, with temperatures generally being -2c to 0c.
Gritters will be deployed overnight with staff on standby at the Stag Lane depot from 23:00.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say that there is potential for black ice leading to extremely hazardous conditions, especially where field run-off flows across roads and walkways.
The warning is in force between 00:01 and 13:00 on Thursday 31st December (New Year’s Eve).
