On this day in 1888, a 40ft-long whale prevented the departure of the passenger steamer Bembridge – bound for Portsmouth – from Seaview as reported by Reynolds Newspaper.
The vessel was followed by the whale, which kept close to the paddle box of the steamer and blew so violently that its deck almost became deluged with water.
After causing a great deal of excitement and concern to the passengers on board the paddle steamer, the whale put out to sea – followed by fishermen in open boats.
Sadly, the fishermen succeeded in driving it onto sandbanks, where it was shot at until it was killed.

How sad. Would love to think such would be cared for and helped now.
But with wonderful charity kept chavs here in droves it would likely suffer from a worse fate at their hands and it’s suffering last moments at their hands uploaded to equally vile to watch on social media now for a ‘laugh’
Isn’t that how Chale Bay got the name Whale Chine?
