A 2-vehicle RTC which saw a van plough into the back of a Southern Vectis bus forced the temporary closure of Emmett Hill yesterday afternoon (Friday).
Emergency services were called to the rural Chale Road shortly before 16:24 following a collision which caused significant damage to both vehicles.
The incident prompted a response from police, who blocked access through the road for roughly 90 minutes whilst recovery of the vehicles and clean-up took place.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called at 16:24 to reports of the collision involving a bus and a van.
It has been revealed that 1 person sustained a minor injury as a result of the collision, which left fuel and oil spilt across the carriageway
Once the damaged van had been recovered, a Stag Lane bus and coach recovery vehicle attended to tow the Southern Vectis Route 6 bus back to the operator’s Nelson Road depot, where it will undergo repairs.
Why the hell is a double decker bus running that route.
I bet one or two passengers at the most

The car ran in to the bus, what difference does it make weather a double or single decker ? Plenty of people use the 6 especially in the holidays
Many people don’t travel on the buses.
What difference would it make if it were a single decker? They take up much the same road space and, in any event, the van ran up the back of it! Actually, the route had to be double-decked, because, back when it was single-decked, it could leave passengers behind on some journeys, due to the infrequent timetable. Southern Vectis can get away with running fewer journeys, if they work it with a double decker and, thus save money on drivers and vehicles.
They use Diesel, which is considerably more efficient than petrol, although, of course a single-decker consumes less than a heavier double-decker. However, since the number of passengers necessitated either more journeys or using double-deckers, the obvious option for a company interested more in profit than service was to run fewer journeys with double-deckers.
Everyday on the island you see Double decker buses
with only an handful of passengers onboard.
Many island routes only require single decker buses
and places like Havenstreet only need Minibuses doing that
route. AT PRESENT THEY DON’T EVEN SERVE THAT ROUTE

on big buses, majority of people don’t want to travel by bus.

Whilst ranting why do cyclists cycle in the middle of the
road along the Military Road knowing it is DANGEROUS
The Twenty is Plenty campaign does not advocate for a blanket 20 mph speed limit. It seeks to limit speed in urban areas to reduce the number of collisions and, in particular, to increase the survival chance or a pedestrian being hit by a car. This road could hardly be called urban so Twenty is Plenty is not appropriate. I agree that cyclists in the middle of the Military Road are a hazard but they are permitted by law to cycle two abreast. The guidance is that they should ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding around bends but since when did cyclists pay attention to guidance. They are without doubt the most selfish of road users who think only of themselves.

But at present Numpties are driving along the Military Road
at 90mph +
Doing 40mph+ in villages that state 20mph
Doing 50 – 60mph along 30mph Roads.

You’re clearly forgetting that the majority of cyclists are also car (or van) drivers, the reason why we cycle a metre from the kerb is simply self preservation, cycling close to the kerb invites careless numpties to overtake dangerously, I’ve been frequently cut up by drivers underestimating my speed, not reading the road properly and in a collision the cyclist will always come off worse!
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all those considerate drivers who allow cyclists space to travel in safety, we have families too.

2. There are always accidents everywhere, the Island isn’t unique in that aspect.
3. Because of a stupid law brought in without consultation, cyclists are allowed to take up the whole of one side of the road and you must pass them as if another 4 wheel vehicle. (You were aware of that I assume?)

If your car has an average speed indicator, it probably shows that your average speed on the Island is about 21mph.
I very much doubt if the bus was going as fast as 20mph at this part of the road!
Some of the buses I see lately are driving too fast.

I would BAN all bicycles from roads unless the

Someone needs to address the speeding issues on the
Island, not to mention all the other criminal behaviour
on island roads.
I don’t think the size of bus was the issue. Other large vehicles also have to use that road. Why did the van hit the back of the bus?
Many van / lorry drivers spend the majority of the time
looking at their phones rather than the road.
It is rife on the island.
The island needs more law and order to see what is actually
going on, on island Roads.
On the mainlands they have trucks with camera catching
such culprits.
