The food hygiene rating of a Lake takeaway has jumped from 0 to 4 after a re-inspection — the highest it has held since 2017.
Following a bad inspection in February, Lake Kebab House has turned its standards around from ‘urgent improvement necessary’ to ‘good’ after a visit was conducted by the Isle of Wight Council last month.
Environmental health officers awarded the worst rating possible to the establishment after they found dirty utensils, false safety checks, a lack of COVID preventative measures and issues with the interior of the building.
After the February inspection, the owner of the Sandown Road takeaway, Bulent Korkmaz, said work had been done to bring things up to standard and rectified the issues pointed out by inspectors.
Now, officers found improvements with the cleanliness and condition of the building and its facilities rated as ‘very good’. Other areas involving compliance with food hygiene and safety protocols and confidence in management and control procedures were ‘generally satisfactory’.
There were still three matters inspectors did raise as needed to be addressed immediately including an unsuitable probe thermometer being used to check the temperature of meats, disorganised documents in the food safety pack and a lack of disinfecting equipment.
The takeaway has had a chequered past with food hygiene inspections, having scored 2 in October 2019, 1 in June 2019 and 3 in February 2016.

I am glad that things have got better, and hope they keep it up. Wish them well.
After the previous episode I took an interest in the grading system 0-5.
I was amazed that it is NOT compulsory to display the sign in the premises. UNBELIEVABLE !!!!
So basically if it is a poor rating you can just bin the sign, we need the Council to address this and bring in regulations to make the display of the rating compulsory , and maybe the green used for the sign should be graded , for example 4-5 – GREEN, 3 – AMBER and 0-2 – RED – so that you could make an informed decision before buying food.
Unless these premises are checked regularly -ie once a week things will slide. The place should have been closed down in the first place.
Avoid, for most likely revert back once the likelyhood of being checked by those who matter has receeded. Anyone can behave correctly if watched, but once not the spots re appear on the Lepoard.
At least with chains such a Mc D’s it is NOT in the staffs interest to break the rules, yet any privately owned food establishment any past sell by date food dumped is ‘their’ pocket hit, not so with Mc D’s or spoons etc.
I understand what you say , but lots of privately owned food outlets and restaurants are proud of what they do and have very high standards.
Many have preparation areas open to public view.
Try a burger at Harbour Kitchen in Cowes.
Very good – and no I have no financial interest. Credit where due.
Wouldn’t touch any of fast food stores with barge pole , just my opinion and my choice
it shouldn’t be allowed to jump from 0-4 stars in two inspections, or if it is allowed, then there should be more unexpected inspections to check up on the matters raised.Because now they think they cleared the inspection that is it for a year or whatever, so can let their guard down on the things that really matter which is health and safety.
