37 cases of COVID-19 were identified on the Isle of Wight during the month of September, latest data reveals.
Since Island Echo’s last report just 7 days ago, the total number of cases on the Island recorded since the start of the pandemic has risen by 13, from 457 to 470.
The most recent case is listed as being confirmed on 29th September, which means further cases could soon be added onto September’s total. During the month of August just 10 cases were confirmed, indicating a 4x growth last month.
470 confirmed cases amongst a population of 141,538 (as of 2018) means that just 0.33% of Island residents have been confirmed as having had the virus.
Despite the recent ‘spike’ in cases, the number of cases being recorded each day and week is not comparable to earlier this year – as demonstrated by the graph below.

Is anyone really surprised all the holiday makers can’t believe government put money before health shocking
All very well saying that if your wealthy and don’t have to worry about earning a living to pay the bills. Wealth and health are not two separate things ,they are intertwined.
Well said some of us have no choice but to put money before health or we couldn’t pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads
Is that why you voted for Brexit? Take back control and all that?
Undemocratic far left idiots like you should emigrate to China, if you love the red flags of Communists that much go live it in all it’s glorious splender….
So what your saying is you would prefer to have money in bank rather than your family you must be a selfish person
You’re not your
Queens English please
We’d all like the health of our family before money in the bank obviously but if we had no money or nowhere to live or no heating or food our family wouldn’t be healthy would they? That’s not being selfish
I’d hardly call keeping a roof overhead selfish. You clearly have enough money to not be in touch with the reality that a lot of people face. A lot of people do not have the option to stay at home and still be able to pay the bills.
There’s none so blind as those who will not see
You’re not your
I’m a worker, in fact a nurse who worked before, during lockdown and after, so I most certainly are not wealthy but I completely agree that it was wrong to put money before health
If only it was that easy! I understand you may not be wealthy but you were earning all throughout the pandemic. Some weren’t and are really struggling.
YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH
My dear old Nan used to say “if health was a thing money could buy, the rich would live and the poor would die”
Where is your evidence that holiday makers are responsible? What about the thousands of Islanders who commute to the mainland every day? You keep spouting the same rubbish at every opportunity without a shred of supporting evidence.
exactly
I completely agree
And the few odd thousand island people travelling off the IOW to work etc. Also interesting is some were sent from the mainland to get tested here! So it’s no good hiding under your bed we have to live with it like every other ailment known to the human race.
.33% of the island population would suggest that we are relatively lucky, and as such, have more freedom than some places within the UK. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe the government statistics, as they continue to make one blunder after another.
Is this all people living on the Island or people being sent here for tests also
Is that it lol
Inevitable infections were going to increase given the numbers of holiday makers that came over. Good for businesses, only businesses that needed the money to stop them going under. Let’s hope the infection rate slows down now. Winter is upon us and we don’t want to hear of increasing numbers being infected. Remember, HANDS, FACE, SPACE everyone.
As a friend of many carers, they are telling me how elderly even as old as 90 are surviving this illness quite calmly with only 4 to 5 days of mild symptoms and a full recovery. The real damage is being done to those with serious illnesses who are now unable to get the required treatment due to this induced hysteria. Realise the number of deaths per year and the average life expectancy remains exactly the same.
Stop spreading miss information. Over 60,000 more people have died this year than has in the previous 10 years. Trying telling your ‘stats’ to the people who have an empty chair in the living room. The ones that have lost someone sooner that they should have.
Who’s Miss Information? What is she spreading?
None of the figures are reliable – your 60,000, for example, comes from figures calculated back in May when deaths amongst the most vulnerable were peaking and does not differentiate between those with underlying health problems and those without. It’s also not clear if it fully accounts for the upward trend in UK Mortality rates since 2013.
There is currently NO accurate figure for the number of people successfully recovering from Covid-19, many of whom may even be unaware they even had it and NO completely accurate figure for the number of deaths directly due to the disease. Only estimates, models and misleading statistics.
Testing covers a tiny minority of the population and even the death figures are unreliable because they include cases where the person had a positive test result within the last 28 days even if the actual cause of death was nothing to do with Covid-19.
If I were to count only the people killed and injured on zebra crossings and ignore all those who cross safely it would be very easy to give the impression that they are far more dangerous than they really are.
I’m not suggesting that Covid-19 isn’t dangerous only pointing out that everyone producing figures does so in order to prove a point of view or justify an action – This adds a level of bias.
Statistics are a tool mainly used by the unethical to fool the unwary and, as such, should be treated with extreme caution.
VentnorRichard was, in the main, quoting from direct sources and made some important points relating to them.
The focus on Covid-19 to the virtual exclusion of all else has meant that there are people who have not received vital testing or treatment. Sadly, some of those people will die as a result.
Even something as seemingly trivial as being unable to get a dental appointment or an eye test could have serious consequences that, in extreme cases could result in loss of life.
That is not a statistic, it is a cold hard fact.
To put it into perspective. That’s 0.0003% of the island, in the whole month. Or on average 0.00007% a week. And that’s IF they were all islanders.
What a fuss if it’s good enough for the president of the USA it’s good enough for us.
That’ll teach him for thinking he’s better than all of us and not following the advice!
Maybe he can get the disinfectant out and show us how it’s done?
During a long, wet, cold Winter, with the old having to queue outside shops, many will get far worse ailments from such, let alone in a weakened state be more prone to catching this virus.
No provision for shelter outside shops have been made, now too late, Winter is upon us
We need the vaccine now.
Good point Geoff, maybe you should tell them to hurry up with the vaccine?
Can’t help but notice there are always posts blaming holiday makers and second home owners in these covid threads but I have never once seen anybody mention the islanders that are forced to go over the other side everyday for work.
Hospitalised?died?? Not many doubt Then dont scaremonger
About time they started taking passengers’ temperatures at ferry ports.
Not everyone can get or wants the app so it is not that effective.
People are still going to travel with symptoms whether deliberately or unknowingly.
Stop them in their tracks before they get on the ferry and spread it.
pippin – instead of demanding that “they” do this and “they” do that – why don’t you get out of your armchair and volunteer to take temperatures. The ferry staff are not medics and are not employed for this purpose.
