The Isle of Wight Council has forked out more than £3,000 for taking too long to arrange help for a child. The boy’s mother complained to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSCO) that without the provision of trained professionals, her son was unable to take full advantage of his education. While the Isle of Wight Council accepted it took too long and apologised for the 10-month delay, the watchdog said it was not possible to make up for it. An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said the authority would look to learn lessons from the complaint and took complaints very seriously. The spokesperson said the council has already agreed to the LGSCO’s findings and recommendations and again apologised to the family. The boy, who has not been named, was issued with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) in December 2022 which said he should have support from a psychologist for his anxiety and an occupational therapist. The therapist was intended to help him with a range of issues including sensory issues and his pencil grip. His mum said the council had not arranged it and complained to them, saying she wanted compensation. The council then made a referral to a private therapist who assessed her son in September 2023, after which his treatment started. In its recently published complaint report, the LGSCO said the council accepted it took too long to arrange support for the child’s anxiety. To make up for the impact on his education, the council offered to pay £3,200 to the family. It was just 3 weeks ago that the Isle of Wight Council were told they had to pay £3,250 to a local family after another EHCP failure – as previously reported by Island Echo.

Was the parent out of pocket by that much because they paid for the services their child needed privately?
Very much doubt it. They are probably just angry that their kid missed out on ten months of colouring in.
Nice earner if you can blag an unprovable medical condition. Let’s all do it – think of it as a council tax rebate.
Paying the ridiculously expensive council tax charge gives me anxiety. It also makes me red with anger when I read that they have given a chunk of it away for no good reason. So in future I would like a council tax rebate for all the mental health problems they have caused me.
Is the compensation going to be ring fenced for educational use?
No it’s for use in the public house
Typical IWC mentality, they try and save money by delays in everything from Education, Adult Social care, Highways , maintenance and staffing . However always then costs more financially that then doesn’t solve the event. Eg death along Forest Road, death at traffic light that took 9mths. This child could, along with many others had a provision that might of been cheaper, more beneficial and short lived. I don’t go to my car and see a bald tyre and then think, I’ll leave it till next MOT it’s only 6wks. Could get 3points,£150 fine and increased insurance+could even die.
The conservatives have been underfunding services for children for years. The IW has a complete lack of provision for children with additional needs, they deserve more. People are very quick to blame parents but why shouldn’t she fight for her son’s right to the support he needs to reach his full potential? People can’t judge, they know nothing about the difficulties the family face, as do countless other families let down by the government.
More of our money squandered on people exploiting the system
About time this kind of crap was stopped, everyone has anxiety and stress these days, this kind of namby pamby attitude should be looked into and stopped.
Blimey– everyone will be jumping on the band wagon now! What kid theses days doesn’t have anxiety? What adult come to think of it as well after the crappy couple of years we’ve all had!! This is PC gone very wrong, give to one give to all— or not at all. What about all the delays for operations and dementia assessments? Don’t see anyone getting compensation for that and it’s a given these days!
No disrespect for the child but his mum obviously knows how to work the system ! ; /
It’s about time the council paid for their mistakes.
