2 people were rescued after becoming stranded following a landslide in the West Wight this afternoon (Thursday). HM Coastguard responded to the revetment at Totland, alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, when 2 casualties – who were near the cliff when the fall happened – became stuck in mud whilst they tried to avoid it. The Needles and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were mobilised to the scene at around 15:30, with Yarmouth RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat also launched. Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent was also scrambled to assist, diverting from a training sortie.
It has been confirmed that the casualties – who were able to self-recover – were located and checked over by the ambulance service before being able to make their own way home.
Totland Parish Council says that due to the landslide, which has occurred on the Totland side of the sea wall to the north of the pier, an emergency closure will be in place tomorrow morning until further notice. The area has been taped off and the emergency closure will start at the gate by the Pier.
