Wessex Cancer Trust has today (Thursday) launched an urgent appeal to create a new Cancer Wellbeing Centre on the Isle of Wight.
This year, the charity needs to raise £100,000 so it can continue to provide practical and emotional support for thousands of Islanders affected by cancer.
The charity has been forced to find a new home following the redevelopment of its leased building in Lugley Street, Newport and the new centre – which will be created in an adjoining building – requires extensive renovation.
By raising £100,000, through its ‘Building for the Future’ appeal, the charity will be able to create a purpose-built community hub from which it can continue to provide services such as professional counselling, drop-in sessions and complementary therapies.
Plans for the new centre include the creation of 3 new treatment rooms, a quiet befriending area, a community area for groups to meet, as well as more flexible space to host new classes and activities.
Wessex Cancer Trust’s CEO, Cait Allen, has said:
“A diagnosis is devastating to a person but also their family and friends. Our Cancer Wellbeing Centre in Newport is a place where anyone can go and get some help. Whether that’s advice on how to pay the bills, professional counselling, or relaxing therapies, there is a listening ear for anyone who needs it.
“We hope the community will come out and support the appeal to help us create a wonderful new space for people affected by cancer.”
Centre user Tori Coles, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 26, said:
“On the Island you’re cut off from so many support services but Wessex has helped me throughout. Wessex Cancer Trust helped put me back together again. A new Island Wellbeing Centre would ensure cancer patients and their families can continue to access support services on their doorstep, in a place that’s warm and welcoming – and that is so important.”
The charity is urging Islanders to get behind the cause by raising money however they can – from making a donation online to fundraising in their local communities and volunteering.
The Island branch has also announced its first major fundraiser – the Brick by Brick Challenge, inviting 50 businesses, community groups, schools or individuals to raise at least £500 for the cause. All those that hit the target will have their name printed on a brick in the new centre and the organisation that raises the most will be invited to open it.
Wessex Cancer Trust will also host a number of fundraising events throughout the year.
