Plumes of smoke coming from the exhaust of a van led to a call out for firefighters in Newport earlier this morning (Thursday).
Shortly before 09:55, 1 appliance from Newport was mobilised to Sea Street where a Vauxhall van appeared to be on fire outside The Railway pub.
Firefighters donned breathing apparatus to resolve the situation, a diesel runaway, which blocked Hollyrood Street and Sea Street for a time.
‘Runaway’ diesel – when the engine consumes oil from an internal leak and runs without fuel from the injectors – usual method of stopping the engine is by putting into top gear and dumping the clutch or blocking the air intake – not an easy feat whilst in a cloud of oily smoke!

To much oil after oil change and diesel engine maybe – Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM, producing up to ten times the engine’s rated output until destroyed by mechanical failure . It just depends on what mood the engine is or what day it is Jimbo. My van’s engine ran away thanks to hydrolux. I’d managed to stall it and when the AA turned up to investigate I was advised to stand back incase of a slight pop from the engine blowing up. Had it not gone quietly it would have dropped fuel and oil onto the hot exhaust system which trust me again from experience creates a few flames. The vans demise was thanks to 7ltr of oil in a 2.3D Nissan and the fiery moment a tired turbo saying see ya later on a 36t DAF ironically serviced where 7ltrs of oil were put into a certain van

Bung a Carrot or stick up the exhaust pipe to fit really tight. The C02 and monoxide will stifle the burning oil, or as said jam a rag in the air intake.
Stop the fuel supply. A diesel will draw rags in and spit them out. As for your carrot, good luck.
The issue is the fuel supply cannot be stopped if it is drawing up sump oil. Apart from removing the sump plug, draining the boiling hot oil, risking getting burnt, AND then ruining the engine as it will run with low or zero oil pressure for a while.
The idea of the carrot or potato in the exhaust, or as said a stout piece of material forced over the air intake filter would be far less damaging. Any cloth would not be drawn into the engine should the filter be left in situ.
