The main road connecting the villages of St Helens and Bembridge has re-opened following an earlier crash, in which a vehicle ploughed into a fence.
Police and paramedics were called to Embankment Road at lunchtime today (Bank Holiday Monday) following reports that a vehicle had left the carriageway.
The crash, which occurred close to the junction with Station Road and Latimer Road, saw a car – understood to be a Land Rover Discovery – smash into a fence, wheelie bin and a metal beam, causing significant damage to the boundary fence and the vehicle.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement, but a response is not expected until Tuesday afternoon.
UPDATE @ 20:22 – Police have confirmed that an individual has died following a medical episode at the wheel.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were mobilised to a road traffic collision on Military Road near Brighstone a short time before the Embankment Road crash.
Fearing that persons were trapped in the wreckage of a vehicle, fire crews from Newport were mobilised alongside other emergency services at shortly before 11:45.
However, it was soon established that the incident was not as serious as first thought leading to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service resources being stood down.
A 33-year-old man in a Skoda Fabia escaped with minor injuries.
