The driver of a Land Rover has tragically died following a medical episode at the wheel whilst travelling between Bembridge and St Helens earlier today (Monday).
As first reported by Island Echo, Police and paramedics were called to Embankment Road at 11:53 this morning to reports of a single vehicle collision involving a grey Land Rover Discovery.
It’s understood the vehicle left the carriageway and ploughed into a garden fence.
It has now been confirmed by Police that the driver – an 86-year-old man from Ryde – suffered a medical episode at the wheel and sadly passed away at St Mary’s Hospital a short time later.
Next of kin have been notified and specialist officers are supporting his family.
The road was reopened by 16:00.
