A car fire has broke out on the main road through Wroxall this afternoon (Sunday).
Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to the incident on St John’s Road having been alerted to smoke issuing from the vehicle at just before 14:40.
The car – a 5 door hatchback – has been engulfed by flames.
The road is blocked as a result of the incident, which has occurred close to the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary heading into the village of Wroxall.
UPDATE @ 15:11 – Firefighters are using 2 hose reel jets to extinguish the car and the grass bank adjacent to it.
Severe damage has been caused to the vehicle rendering it little more than a shell.
Crews have used Halligan tools to crowbar open the bonnet and boot areas of the vehicle to allow water to be sprayed in to cool and douse the areas.
UPDATE @ 15:35 – The fire has now been extinguished by firefighters with the retained crew from Shanklin remaining on scene to manage scene safety and traffic.
Crews have put measures in place to prevent any fuel and oil from the car mixed with the water used to extinguish the flames leaking into the sewerage and drainage systems.
One lane of the carriageway remains blocked as the team finish dousing the car.
