Motorists are facing delays travelling through Newport this morning (Tuesday) as a result of a reported car fire.
The incident has occurred on St George’s Way close to the Cineworld complex – slap bang in the middle of the one-way system currently in place for roadworks in the area.
Island Echo is told a white Fiat Panda is involved, with the fire seemingly contained to the engine bay. 1 fire appliance from Newport is in attendance, with firefighters working to contain and extinguish the fire.
Alternative routes are extremely limited for those heading south towards Blackwater.
UPDATE @ 11:05 – Firefighters have used a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire within the engine bay of the Panda.
Large sections of the front grill have melted away from the vehicle with damage also being caused to the headlights and the structure of the bonnet.
1 police unit from Hampshire Constabulary is in attendance at the scene.
Traffic is flowing thanks to the actions of a nearby roadworks crew who have moved the barriers to one side, allowing traffic to pass in the ordinarily closed lane.
Fire crews are checking the vehicle for any further hotspots and it is understood that the Newport appliance will soon stand down, with the recovery of the vehicle expected to happen later.

This is probably the most action that’s happened here since the road has been closed and supposedly workman are widening the road!!!! Every time I’ve driven through there, no workman around whatsoever and not much progress at all.
