A community interest company is launching a fundraiser in a bid to bring markets – including a Christmas market – back to Newport town centre.
Market Days CIC was set up as a not-for-profit company that aims to bring back market trading to the historic county town of the Isle of Wight. The organisation aims to raise at least £40,000 to establish regular markets and support new producers, artisans, and traders in Newport and across the Island.
Market Days believes that providing a bustling and busy environment at the heart of Newport is especially important at this time where the town is suffering from the loss of many of the large national retailers following the coronavirus pandemic.
Newport is a historic town and markets have been at the centre of its community since the 12th century when Richard de Redvers, the first feudal baron of Plympton, granted the town a market in 1884.
Your help and donations will mean that Market Days CIC can put on more markets and events in the town squares and public spaces in Newport and the Isle of Wight which we hope will build community and a sense of pride and belonging.
The money will be used to
- Bring markets including Christmas markets in 2021 to Newport!
- Cover the costs of putting on markets including the costs of event organisation, admin, and advertising.
- Provide advice and workshops to new traders to help them build their businesses, providing them all the information they need to get started
- Provide support for new traders to help them with costs of insurance, banking and fees
- Create jobs within the Market Days company
Claire Kennard the founding director of Market Days CIC said:
“Since April 17th this year we have been holding regular Saturday Market events which incorporate street performance, busking and family activities and they really bring life to the town square. It is wonderful to see people enjoying a chat and reconnecting with each other in the safety of the fresh air.
“The market is more than just a place to shop it is a central focus for community building and a way to support local producers, artists and makers.
“With the support of the people of the Isle of Wight I believe we can help bring vibrancy and life back to Newport with markets at the heart of its revival.”

Not sure what parking fees have to do with it.
Definitely. I love Christmas. Looking forward to it this year. Got my lovely Christmas drinking glasses ready in my cupboard to fill with rum each night.
No is my answer. No is precise and to the point.
Give No a chance.
This would be fantastic, if it can get off the ground.
Are we talking about a proper big blackbush style market.. or a couple stalls? Mayby flatten the shops grass it over and have one every day?
Will you lift all parking restrictions?

Don’t be silly.
When we’re past this pandemic, maybe 2022. Then I can see would be fun for a lot of people. 🙂 Don’t see an issue. My main concern is the drive to over consume at Christmas. And what I find immoral is the use of the children to drive this buying frenzy. And the churches go along with it because it helps their cause. Ironic that religion, the self proclaimed bastion of ethics, are the most unethical.
Yes, I would like to see a Christmas market in Newport. But didn’t they have one at Ryde harbour a few years back ? What happened to that ?
I would love to see one in newport I have always wanted to go to one but there to far for me and have to use a mobility scooter
