UPDATED: Quality Island food, handmade crafts and street entertainment will be on offer at Newport’s weekly ‘Market on the Quay’ which gets under way this Friday (24th August).
The perfect place to enjoy some tasty cooked food and watch the world go by, the market, supported by the Isle of Wight Council, will run every Friday until the end of September.
Amy Shephard, of Five Star PR and Events, said:
“Newport Quay is one of the town’s best-kept secrets and so we’re looking to make the most of its beautiful surroundings with a weekly event that provides something for all the family.
“As well as a host of street food outlets and Island craft stalls, there will be regular live music and children’s entertainment, as well as the occasional cookery demonstration with local chefs.
“Families can make use of the adjoining Seaclose Park, or stop to feed the ducks on the River Medina and, with it being conveniently located on the cycle track, it’s the perfect pitstop for cyclists, as well as those who work in the town.”
Organisers have also announced the weekly event will help raise funds for Wessex Cancer Trust’s £100,000 Building for the Future appeal to create a new cancer support centre in the town.
The Isle of Wight Council’s Assistant Director of Regeneration, Reneira O’Donnell, said:
“We are delighted the market will be operational once again.
“The council has worked hard to improve the infrastructure necessary and find the right provider to brighten our lunchtimes.
“The timing is great, as we are about to appoint a team to take the site forward and create a masterplan for a vibrant and thriving harbourside in the heart of the county town.
“I can’t wait to once again be able to sit down and eat my lunch outdoors, while watching the comings and goings on the River Medina.”
There are also plans to host a special quayside event at Christmas. The market runs from 10:30-16:00.
UPDATED: Organisers say that due to illness and circumstances beyond their control, the inaugural Market on the Quay has been postponed until next Friday (31st August).
