A yellow weather warning for strong gales has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with 65mph winds possible on Friday.
Local forecasters IW Met Service say that an unseasonably strong low pressure system will push across the UK through Thursday and Friday, bringing with it adverse weather conditions for the South.
Winds around the southern edge of this system will reach gale or even severe gale force throughout Friday, with south-westerly gusts of 60-65mph expected around exposed coasts and headlands, although closer to 40-45mph elsewhere.
With the majority of trees now in full leaf some places can expect to see falling tree debris.
Very large, hazardous waves are possible around the Western and Southern coasts of the island, although no coastal flooding or significant overtopping is expected due to the small tides.
Travel is unlikely to see too many disruptions on the Island, although cross-Solent travel could well experience delays and disruptions.
The warning is in force from 02:00 until 21:00 on Friday 21st May.
UPDATE THURSDAY – The warning period has been extended and now runs from 22:00 tonight until 21:00 on Friday night.
