UPDATED: Changes to waste collections on the Isle of Wight, designed to increase recycling and reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill, have now come into force following their introduction yesterday (2nd May).
As part of the Isle of Wight Council’s new 25-year waste contract with Amey, households across the Isle of Wight are now required to use black wheelie bins and green wheelie bins, or newly-introduced green and black gull-proof sacks.
For those with a green wheelie bin a black insert box for paper/card waste should have been delivered, alongside a separate and smaller black wheelie bin. For those who have been allocated a green gull-proof sack, an additional blue reusable sack for your paper/card waste has been delivered with a black sack.
The changes have caused some controversy with many Islanders saying that the new black wheelie bins will not be big enough for their needs. When Island Echo highlighted the possible issue with Amey and the Isle of Wight Council several weeks ago, it was stated the bins will hold 4 black bags which should be adequate for Island households. Any black bags left at the roadside outside of the wheelie bin will not be collected.
Isle of Wight Council member for environmental sustainability, Councillor Paul Fuller, said:
“These changes, in partnership with Amey, will play a significant role in improving recycling on the Island and reducing the amount we send to landfill – as well as improving our local environment through the better containment of household waste.
“As with any changes there will be a period of bedding in as people get used to the new arrangements – and the council and Amey will be doing all we can to assist in making the transition as smooth as possible for Island residents.
“Let us all play our part in endeavouring to place the Isle of Wight at the very forefront of recycling in the UK.”
