Over 7,800 walkers are this morning (Sunday) starting their journey across the Island as Walk the Wight 2014 gets underway in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
Individuals, groups and even pets of all ages are raising much-needed funds for the Newport-based hospice in what is the 23rd year of the annual event.
At 06:30 the ribbon was cut by Lord Lieutenant Major General Martin White and thousands set off on the challenge of a 26.5 mile walk from Bembridge to the Needles, with some keen enthusiasts running away from the start line aiming to reach the final leg in the West Wight in record time. Walkers have already reached Brading and Knighton this morning, en route to Arreton.
Some walkers, however, will be tackling a shorter 12.5 mile stretch to Carisbrooke, or the 14 mile stomp from Carisbrooke to the Needles. For the less adventurous, the disabled and for children, the ever-growing flat walk between Sandown and Shide is also taking place once again this year.
The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, will be at The Needles this lunchtime to hand out medals to those crossing the finish line.
