Thousands upon thousands of walkers are this morning (Sunday) starting their journey across the Island as Walk the Wight gets underway for 2016, all in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
From a fireman in full kit to a 90-year-old man, supporters of the hospice from all walks of life are coming together today to raise funds for the Newport-based centre, which cares for individuals at the end of their life.
Walkers set off from Bembridge at 06:00 at the start of the 26.5 mile challenge – some may do half of the route to Carisbrooke, whilst others will begin at Carisbrooke from 09:30 and make their way across the downland to The Needles. A Flat Walk from Sandown to Shide is also taking place today, with walkers setting off from 08:30.
As previously reported, Hampshire firefighter Matthew Horne is walking the entire length of Walk the Wight in his firefighting kit, including breathing apparatus. Matt is raising money for the Hospice after sadly losing his sister to cancer – she was cared for by the Hospice in her final weeks.
Earl Mountbatten Hospice CEO Nigel Hartley is among those taking on the full walk from Bembridge to the Needles. He said:
“Last year was my first experience of Walk the Wight and I was truly humbled to see so many Islanders get involved to support our patients and families receiving care, both at the Hospice and across the wider community. We are also very fortunate to have the support of our sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible.
“I shall be walking on Sunday with a friend whose father died at the hospice, and I know that many others will also be remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. Their continued support will mean that we can continue to provide the highest quality care possible for people with a whole range of life-limiting conditions.
“Good luck and thank you to everyone who takes part, including our 300 volunteers and event staff”.
