Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Isle of Wight community, this year’s Walk the Wight has beaten its ambitious fundraising target. An incredible £301,716 in donations has been received, which will go towards Earl Mountbatten Hospice’s care for Islanders in their last years of life and support for their families.
Following the success of the silver anniversary event in 2015, which raised over £270,000, Earl Mountbatten Hospice Chief Executive Nigel Hartley set this year’s goal at £300,000.
He said:
“This is an incredible achievement by our community and I would like to thank the whole Island for continuing to get behind this event. Having taken part in the walk myself, I have seen the commitment and determination of our walkers to raise as much as possible to support our work in people’s own homes and on our hospice ward. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved, including all of those who volunteer and give their time to make the event such a massive success!”
Over 7,400 men, women and children, along with hundreds of dogs and even a few llamas and alpacas took part in the iconic event this year.
Jax Jones, Major Events Fundraiser and organiser of Walk the Wight said the team was ‘over the moon’ with the event’s success:
“Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has raised such a phenomenal amount of money! We are incredibly grateful for your support, which means so much to us and our patients, their families, friends and carers.
“You are all awesome”.
The date for next year’s Walk the Wight has been set for Sunday 14th May 2017 and you can register online and in hospice shops from Friday 27 January 2017.
