Local businesses and volunteers are rallying together to host a special Christmas lunch for those who face spending the festive period alone.
Homecare provider Right at Home Isle of Wight will host the event at Bembridge Village Hall on Christmas Day, with the help of generous members of the community, who will give up time with their own families to support lonely and isolated residents.
The lunch will be held free of charge for anyone who will be alone at Christmas.
Vicky and Paul Butler, Owners of Right at Home Isle of Wight and organisers of the event, said:
“I cannot remember the last time, as an adult, that I have looked forward so much to Christmas Day. Arranging this event has genuinely shown me the true meaning of Christmas spirit as we have been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of volunteers, businesses and the local community and so humbled to hear how much this event means to those who are attending.”
Right at Home has teamed up with several businesses, including local restaurant, Frampton’s, whose chef, Johnny, will cook a delicious meal for the event.
Bembridge Farm Shop, Bembridge Bakery, Bembridge Fishmongers and Lane End Co-op will donate food for the lunch, while The Pilot Boat Inn and On the Rocks will provide drinks and Bembridge Florist will supply table decorations.
The Parish Council is also supporting the event, providing a minibus for anyone who requires transportation to and from the event.
Meanwhile, pupils at Bembridge Primary School have been busy making Christmas cards for all attendees.
In a statement, the Parish Council said:
“Bembridge Parish Council is proud to be supporting this incredible event. It serves as not only a reminder of true Christmas spirit, but also a reflection of the fantastic community spirit that exists in our village.”
Leanne Winterbottom, who will drive the minibus, said:
“Volunteering on Christmas Day is a meaningful way for me to give back to the community and hopefully spread joy during a time that can be challenging for many. I believe that the Christmas season is not just about celebration but also about compassion and connection. By participating in a community project, I hope to bring smiles to those in need, foster a sense of belonging, and create lasting memories.”
“This experience allows me to connect with others, share kindness, and remind myself of the importance of gratitude and generosity. Volunteering is a way to honour the spirit of Christmas, showing that we can all make a difference, no matter how small.”
Right at Home Isle of Wight is no stranger to hosting community events – in August the provider held the Older Person’s Good Living Show at Sandown Airport, with over 500 Islanders in attendance. The event was aimed at supporting older people on the Island to live well at home for longer.
