Guides from across the Island recently took part in the annual Red Squirrel Outdoor Cooking competition, held in Godshill.
The Red Squirrel Trophy is awarded to the winning team for the best prepared and tasty meal cooked outdoors on a fire prepared by the team members. However, other criteria is also judged such as menu planning and shopping, food preparation, hygiene, kitchen management as well as team working.
Prior to the event teams were given a brief with this year’s brief being for a 2 course meal.
Menus included chicken kebabs, spaghetti and meatballs, beef nachos, camp doughnuts,vegan stew, berry pancakes, cheeseburger and cinnamon/apple crepes.
At the end of the various tasks the winning team was from 11th Newport Guides with their best meal of Beef Nachos and Camp Doughnuts.
There was just one point between the winning team and the runners up and one point between second and third.
Judge Deborah Meadows said:
“All the food was very well cooked and very tasty”.
Judge Carol Firth added, said:
”It is always a privilege to be asked to judge the Squirrel Trophy Guides Outdoor Cooking Competition. It is a joy to see the girls working so well in their teams, helping each other and having so much fun, whilst learning new skills which will stay with them for life.”
