UPDATED: A 17-year-old teenager has been arrested by Police as part of an investigation into a serious assault on a 26-year-old man in Ryde during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) – shortly after a 20-year-old woman was attacked with a bottle around a mile away.
Police were called to Appley Beach between Ryde and Seaview at 00:30 following reports of a fight. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were requested to attend the scene and conveyed a 26-year-old man to St Mary’s Hospital.
The victim, from Ventnor, is said to be suffering from serious head and facial injuries.
Officers have arrested and are questioning a 17-year-old male on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
Meanwhile, Police are also investigating an assault on a 20-year-old woman who was attacked with a glass bottle on Ryde Esplanade around 25 minutes beforehand.
The woman, who was with her boyfriend near to Ryde Bus Station, was also conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital and has received treatment to her ear, which has been glued and stitched.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: A second 17-year-old male has been arrested by Police as they continue to investigate the assault on a 26-old-old man at Appley.
Both teenagers have now been bailed until 17th October pending further enquiries.
Investigating officer DC Victoria Hayward said:
“This is a very serious assault. If anyone recorded any footage of the assault on a mobile phone or saw what happened in the Appley beach area that evening, it could help to establish how many people were involved in this assault”.
