A large group of men had to be escorted off the Isle of Wight yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday) when their anti-social antics in Cowes turned into a public order incident.
Police were called to The Duke of York pub on the High Street at 14:51 when the mainlanders’ behaviour started to cause a nuisance to other patrons.
Officers descended on Cowes and located the men at Town Quay before escorting the group to the Red Jet terminal, ensuring they got on the 16:45 hi-speed ferry and off the Island.
Island Echo has been told that a number of pubs were alerted to the group’s presence and were prepared to refuse entry. The group are alleged to have been throwing chairs around, calling bar staff ‘fat slags’ and telling people to carry out sexual acts – all whilst in the earshot of youngsters.
When en route back to the mainland, the group are said to have interfered with lifejackets on board the Red Jet and proceeded to shout ‘pigs’ at the Police whilst making grunting noises.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called to The Duke of York on Mill Hill Road in Cowes at 2:51pm on Monday 2 May to a report of a public order incident.
“A large group of men had been asked to leave the pub after causing a nuisance to other customers.
“The group was later located close to the Red Funnel terminal and the men were escorted onto the ferry to return to the mainland. A speaker that had been stolen from Town Quay earlier in the day was later located and will be returned to its owner.
“As a result of the initial call being received a 12-hour Section 35 dispersal order was introduced for the immediate area in Cowes to prevent further anti-social behaviour”.
Good on the Police, well done, pity they can’t do the same to Island scum, the courts don’t do enough to deal with local louts.
Should have made them swim back rather than inflict them upon passengers and ferry crew.
Can they do that with every low life.
Why were they not arrested. Oh I know they had issues and didn’t know they were being a holes
And to think there are some out there that want a fixed link, this would be a regular thing if that happened i can assure you.
It is regular thing already, but caused by drug addict islanders.
Myth of a low crime rate here.
Drunks, drugs and antisocial behaviour abounds. Have you been living under a rock?
Build a fixed link and most would bloody leave for a decent pub or restaurant.
Albeit a difficult job I don’t think the police behaved at all well.
They were not ‘escorted off’ the IW, the police, knowing that they were extremely disruptive, thought it alright to dump them on the Red Jet and make them a problem for the crew and passengers trapped on the ferry where they proceeded to interfere with essential safety equipment.
This used to be a regular occurrence on another IW passenger ferry route until the masters refused to subject their other passengers to that sort of abuse and refused to carry such people unless they had a police escort
The police then had to address it properly.
Well done Police but surely laws have been broken and they should not be allowed to get away with it or they will never get the message that this will not be tolerated.
Absolute Yobs.
Encountered this lot at the Southampton end. All aged about 18-21 with plenty of girls amongst the group staggering around in their bare feet and swearing at each other. A pretty grim spectacle really.
I think most have missed the point here, they behave like that because they know the police will not arrest them, and guess what they could have arrested them but put them on a ferry – a moving vessel at sea where further trouble happened…..how is that a success…….speaking as ex police here
Should have put them in a rowing boat and told to row back. Why should other fare paying passengers have to put up with their obscene behaviour.
Why were these trouble makers allowed to come to the Island in the first place. They must have been causing problems before boarding the red jet on the mainland
Surely by damaging safety equipment and being aggressive on the RedJet , then Red Funnel should be able to take legal action against them, if it is possible then it should be pursued.
If no action is taken then they will never ever learn that this yobbish behaviour is not acceptable. Pity the next victims.
I don’t want to point out the obvious, but isn’t ‘throwing chairs around, calling bar staff ‘fat slags’, telling people to carry out sexual acts and interfering with safety equipment on board a ferry’ an offence for which you would expect to be arrested? Seems a bit odd to simply put them on a boat back to the mainland and move the problem somewhere else.
Maybe the police didn’t want the paperwork ,easy way out
Out of sight, out of mind, It’s not the first time people have been escorted onto the ferry, expecting red Funnel staff to take on responsibility of controlling them, putting themselves and others at risk. I understand that some police officers were on the ferry with them, but as soon as they got to Southampton, the officers got straight back onto the ferry to come back to the IOW, leaving these abusive and potentially aggressive group of people to Red Funnel staff to then deal with at the ferry port. Not good enough! Officers should have been arranged to escort from ferry and off site.
They should have kicked all these filth off the Red Jet mid Solent!!!!
Bye bye, don’t come back anytime soon, your not welcome here. Behaviour you demonstrate, I don’t think you would be welcome anywhere on the mainland either. Idiots.
didn’t that put the Red Jet in danger?
Why were they not arrested here or even at Southampton.
They could have been fined at the very least it always hurts when its in the pocket.
The courts waste so much time and make so much money out of this kind of thing that it would be better to give them a heavy fine and yes bypass the shark solicitors and courts making mega bucks.
I am for justice but believe me they waste so much time racking up their pay packets its obscene.
On the spot fines and stop their benefits for a time.
Had enough of the justice system and the lame way they deal with trouble here.
Well done for getting rid of but I hope there was a Police presence waiting for them on the other side.
there wasn’t. 🙁
Why didn’t they arrest them all and release them separately the next day after their tickets expired
They would have travelled alone and not put the boat passengers in danger
