UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is attending a reported fire on board a train at Ryde Pier this evening (Tuesday).
4 appliances from Ryde, Shanklin and Newport are on scene alongside the Land Rover Defender from Ryde. They were called into action shortly before 19:25.
Witnesses have told Island Echo that they have seen flames from the underside of the carriage at the front, near to the driver’s position.
The incident has occurred at the far end of the pier at the station known as Ryde Pier Head.
Island Line services have been suspended for the rest of the day, according to South Western Railway.
UPDATE @ 20:15 – Firefighters are now standing down from the incident.
It has been confirmed that the small fire – thought to be electrical – was extinguished by train staff prior to the arrival of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Ryde Pier remains open as normal, but train services are suspended tonight.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – Lines have re-opened, with the first services to operate being the 21:18 Shanklin to Ryde Pier Head and the 22:08 Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin.
