Roads policing officers from the mainland were out in force across the Isle of Wight last week, identifying 120 offences in just 2 days. Over Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th February, officers from the mainland-based Roads Policing Unit, alongside their 2 Isle of Wight-based colleagues, targeted Newport, Wootton, Cowes, Ryde and Yarmouth, with particular focus paid to busy routes – such as Fairlee Road – during busy rush hour times. Numerous offences were found including careless driving, handheld mobile phone use, no seatbelts, excess speed, insecure loads, tax offences, contravening red lights, tyre tread and more. A total of 2 drivers were dealt with for drug driving – 1 for cocaine and 1 for cannabis – whilst 5 vehicles were seized for either having no licence or no insurance. Officers found 1 vehicle was being driven without tax since September 2023. A spokesperson from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit has said:
“Despite all of this, we have noticed a significant improvement in the number of insecure loads we have seen in recent times and there has also been a reduction in seatbelt tickets we have had to issue.”

Just think how many they would get if they were here all the time.
We would have much safer roads.
Great to see.
I would issue motorists with heavy fines and points on
their licences.
There are too many motorists on the island who park on Double yellow lines,
on Pavements, in Disabled bays and on Zig Zags.
Instant 12 month ban for offenders, they won’t do it again!
Hahahaha yawn!
Maybe pay more attention to the elderly drivers they don’t have a clue and they are a danger just hope nobody gets hurt due to their stupidity
Nothing wrong with driving at 10mph and unable to judge gaps
No need to be rude about women drivers even if what you say is true, Bob.
worse offenders are between the ages 16 to 45
But no one died now, did they?
There’s a little white van being driven around with red tape all over where the rear window glass should be , how is that legal
Not a legal requirement to have internal rear view. All vehicles have wing mirrors…they are a legal requirement.
It does when the said van is untaxed and without MOT
Air conditioning!!
There is still a Mitsubishi shogun reg PK07 VTP still going around the Island drive driving and not having A valid MOT, all the paying road users suffer huge increase prices in insurance due to these idiots….
But when will they stop the kids using the parks after dark?
Exactly, there is real crime to be taken care of. Stop attacking innocent motorists and start attacking young people, they are anti social!
We need these here on a full time basis, make our
Roads safe.
Too many motorists break the rules.
Shame you don’t put this much effort in catching burglars, thief’s and pedo’s! No money in that thou I suppose……
Or catching a cold.
Lol
I’d like to see the police arrive unnanounced at County Hall and drug/drink test every single councillor and council officer.
What, arrest their chums from the lodge? Like you I’d like to see it happen but not over here with this level of corruption!
Perish the thought, how would the island survive if half of them were in custody
Waste of police resources…there’s no law against intoxication, only if ‘in charge of’. If it was, anyone could be arrested. Doubt there’s enough police in the country for that one, let alone the island!
This just shows we need more than just 2 RPU Officers. Bring back the RPU team properly based back out at shanklin with more cars and bikes.
The Island needs it.
There are too many D’ckheads driving fast on Island Roads
Increase the points given to speeding motorists and
apply heavier fines.
Let’s stop the B’stards
Did they all give each other tickets, when they all went through a red light after getting off the ferry?
Police should sit near any round about on the Island and fine all the drivers who go
round the wrong way or cut straight across they would make a fortune !!
Still too many motorists driving whilst using their phones.
Great job as suggested would be good if a permanent presence might help reduce some accidents ultimately.. Agree with inappropriate parking on double yellow lines and pavements causing problems. Speeding in the built up areas is a particular concern.
